COMPARING RW90 & T90/TWN75

Nexans stocks both RW90 and T90/TWN75 but we would like to point out the superiority of RW90 for most applications:

SUNLIGHT RESISTANCE -T90/TWN75 is not sunlight resistant in any colour or any size. RW90 is sunlight resistant in BLACK #6 and larger. No other colour or size RW90 is sunlight resistant.

TEMPERATURE RATING - RW90 is 90° C rated in both wet and dry installations, while T90/TWN75 is 90° C dry and 75° C wet. This may result in a smaller conductor size for a given current requirement in a wet location such as underground duct. In addition this may result in a smaller duct size.

CONDUIT FILL - Since 1995 Nexans, as well as most other manufacturers, has been making it’s standard stock RW90 with a 600 volt insulation thickness. This results in a smaller outside diameter (O.D.). In sizes #14 to #6 T90/TWN75 still has a smaller O.D. In sizes #4 and larger RW90 now has an O.D. slightly less than T90/TWN75. This may result in a smaller conduit size or more wires of a given size in a conduit. Check Table #6 in the Canadian Electrical Code and the table below. There are a few cases where this applies, but Table #6 also shows that RW90 does not require a larger conduit in #4 and Larger.

SIZE RANGE - RW90 is manufactured in sizes #14 AWG to 1000 kcmil in copper and #4 AWG to 750 kcmil in ACM aluminum. T90/TWN75 is manufactured in #14 to 500 kcmil in copper only             ( Canadian Electrical Code limits the use of T90/TWN75 to a maximum conductor size of 500 kcmil ).

COLD TEMPERATURE INSTALLATION - RW90 passes CSA’s cold impact test at -40° C and is marked -40. T90/TWN 75 passes CSA’s cold bend at -30° C and no cold impact is required for this product. Nexans recommends a minimum installation temperature of -10° C for T90/TWN75. With suitable handling precautions RW90 may be installed at ambient temperatures as low as -40° C.

RW90 VS T90/TWN75 COMPARISON CHART

RW90

T90/TWN75

Voltage Rating

600 volts

600 volts

O.D.

Smaller than T90 in sizes #4 and larger.

Smaller than RW90 in sizes #14 to #6.

In the majority of installations using circuit size conductors (3 or 4 conductors in conduit), RW90 requires the same conduit size as T90/TWN75.

Sizes #4 and larger, RW90 may require conduit smaller than T90/TWN75

Note: See Table #6 in the 2006 Canadian Electrical Code for conduit fill.

Stranding

Class B stranding.

Size #2 and smaller has Class "C" stranding, and will be slightly more flexible in these sizes.

Construction

Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation.

PVC insulation with Nylon covering.

RW90 is more resistant to abrasion, cracks and tears.

FT Rating

CSA applies no FT rating for RW90 products.

FT1

The FT Rating is not relevant for cable in conduit.

Maximum Conductor Rating

90 degree C both Wet and Dry

90 degree C Dry 75 degree C Wet

This could result in a smaller duct size required for underground installations using RW90.

Cold Bend

-40 degree

Passes -30 degree but -10 degree only recommended

Sunlight Resistance

Black #6 and larger is sunlight resistant.

NOT sunlight resistant in any size or colour.

Nexans Black RW90 #6 and larger can be used as service entrance cable, even where exposed to sunlight. See the Canadian Electrical Code re neutral conductor identification.
